Semiconductor discharge tubes are overvoltage protection devices made using the principle of thyristors. They rely on the breakdown current of PN junctions to trigger device conduction and discharge, and can flow large surge currents or pulse currents. The range of its breakdown voltage constitutes the range of overvoltage protection.
